Understanding your Parents to Better Understand Yourself
Many young adults find it difficult to communicate or come to agreements with their parents. Even though it is considered a normal part of development, this can be very frustrating for everyone involved. How parents and caregivers relate to young adults or how they handle disagreements can vary widely, which is why it is important to understand what these differences in parenting styles can be attributed to. Those differences can include:
- Socioeconomic Status
- Personal Parenting Background (i.e. how the parent was brought up as a child)
If in the future you take these differences into consideration, you and your parents may be able to communicate more effectively to better resolve conflicts. Sometimes, thinking about a parent or caregiver in the context of what they have been through, how they were raised, or what their strengths are, can help you relate to them and improve your relationship. No one is perfect, including parents!
