State Legislative Advocacy Tips
Many young adults find that sharing their personal story to effect broader legislative changes and ultimately help others is a rewarding and empowering experience that gives meaning to their lives. You may discover in your recovery that becoming an advocate and using your negative experiences to bring about positive changes can give you a sense of self-worth and strength as well as distract you from your mental health condition.
There is no greater journey than transforming from a victim to a survivor to ultimately, an empowered and effective advocate. This section is designed to help you get there by including background information on the legislative process and tips on how you can become involved in the legislative process and how you can effectively share your personal story to support your cause.
To access information about your state’s legislature, visit the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Legislative Action Center. You may also want to contact your NAMI state organizations and local affiliates to join in on their advocacy efforts.
